Child porn runs rampant on net

Anna Caldwell
March 01, 2010

THE "cowboy world" of online child pornography will run rampant until an international treaty is enforced, one of Australia's leading child safety advocates says.

Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnson described the internet as the "devil's playground" when it came to protecting children. Her comments came after The Courier-Mail revealed a live map of Queenslanders swapping heinous electronic files over the internet.

Child-protection specialist Detective John Rouse said new technology had revealed the immensity of the problem.

Ms Johnson said that while Australian federal laws worked to help catch predators, only an international solution could stop the problem.

"Until that exists, people in unregulated countries will keep producing the material," she said.

"And as long as we focus on federal laws we are doing nothing to protect children in places like Thailand and the Philippines. Not only that – we need serious sentences attached to these agreements, otherwise there is no deterrent."

Ms Johnson said a UN treaty would be one of the best models.

"Australia already co-operates well with the US, Canada and UK in dealing with the problem of online predators, and it is working well," she said. "If we could extend this co-operation to other countries, I think we'd make significant progress."

Ms Johnson said the net's constant fast evolution meant authorities were racing time.

Some security setups on computers will allow you to prevent the use of naughty words,
ladies, forgive the french here, I am not being rude,
the word "co*k" it is another word for male bird,
or in a surname, "Cockburn" or the name of a road or street,
these simple words can be blocked with the right settings in the right program,
if something like that were able to be introduced to the internet then perhaps it could block access to sites with such words within them,
I do the family tree, in England there was a gang named "The co*k Road Gang"
as in, the home was on "co*k Road" I send email to a cousin and it is blocked because of that word.

This so scary when so many children use the computer on a daily basis, I think one of the main things when they are on the computer is to have it in a central place so their parents can see exactly what they are doing.

That is true KG but there is also the fancy gizmo stuff on mobile phones now that give access to the internet with facebook and messenger and so on, even if it is blocked or restricted by the parents, some smart kid that can hack into computers will or has worked out how to get into the mobile phone settings.

I like those sting operations the police do, when they pretend to be a 12 year old, then let a pedophile groom and lure them, then catch the bastard.

There was a TV show in the US where a TV station did the same, they'd go to chatrooms as a 14 year old boy, or a young girl, all alone at home. One man turned up naked with a six pack of beer - and that was rather difficult to explain to the cameras. One guy was caught twice, which makes "I've never done this before" a little unconvincing.

I think there should be a HUGE increase in those, encourage TV networks to do it, let them film the police at work, sort of a 'Border Security' with pedophiles. Let the filth worry that Bindi, their latest little 12 year old virgin conquest, might actually be a 50 year old cop called Barry. FLOOD the net with pedophile hunters, until they don't feel safe there.

I know it's not the full solution, there's a need for so many laws and checks, but it would scare some of them off, and it'd also show kids how they work, it'd show them that the pedophile is less of an exciting romantic adventure, and more of a pathetic sleazy jerk.

There'll come a time when a clever lawyer will get his client off because they haven't actually been communicating with a child so, technically, they haven't really committed an offence. Actually, I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. When it does, it might mean all the convictions obtained from these stings will have to be set aside.

Even if it does come to that, it should still be seen as "Intent"
same as "Intent to cause bodily harm"

"Intent to kill" "Intent to murder"
should fall under the same.

They could say their intent was to hook up with a police officer pretending to be a child.

Thats why the sting operations, the adrenalin kicks in and the offender thinks they are getting what they want, all on camera hopefully.probelm is it takes so long to get that evidence and trap them in the act.

If a TV station runs the sting, at least the bastards get plastered all over the TV. They see a few of those shows, and at least it might worry them, the thought of everyone knowing what they are could slow them down a bit. We can but hope.

There lies the "Loophole" part of it,
as we say, you are innocent until proven guilty,
if video is being used and made public before a court sitting, the video and perhaps the case thrown out.
