Australians are slaves to the internet

Jennifer Dudley-Nicholson

AUSTRALIANS are spending more time online, with the average user surfing the net for more than two working days a week.

Generation Y is even more committed, spending the equivalent of almost a full day and night online each week. Baby Boomers are jumping on board too, spending almost as much time online as they do watching television.

The details were revealed yesterday in Nielsen's 2010 Internet and Technology Report.

The study of 2371 Australians showed internet use jumped 9 per cent from last year, an extra 90 minutes a week, and the average internet user now spent 17.6 hours online a week .

Men spent more time online than women, by an average of 3.1 hours, and those aged between 16 and 29 were the biggest internet users, at 22 hours a week.

Television viewing increased 30 minutes to 13.4 hours a week, as Australians engaged in "media multi-tasking" and used technology such as personal video recorders to control their viewing.

Australians also spent more time reading newspapers (3.2 hours), listening to radio (13.4 hours) and reading books (5.6 hours) each week.

And what about all those children, inparticular females, with the fancy phone with internet access for messenger and facebook, they are given the phone as a form of compensation for the parent/s not being at home and always working or at business dinners and so on, they would be under the blanket hiding the phone from mum or dad, chatting to friends til the wee hours of the morning, then they do it at school in meal breaks.

I watch TV while on the net, often also while talking on the phone, reading a book, making shopping lists or getting some work done. I multitask.

But the article didn't say if it was a good or bad thing. There's worse things you could be doing with the time.

Of course, there's better things, too.
