Patients moved after hospital ceiling collapses

A health bureaucrat has defended the handling of a ceiling collapse in a ward of the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH).

Chief executive of the Central Northern Adelaide Health Service Martin Turner says patients were evacuated from the ward and neighbouring rooms a fortnight ago.

A hot water pipe burst in a roof area containing asbestos.

One patient was moved out of the orthopaedic trauma ward and 13 in adjoining rooms were moved as a precaution.

Mr Turner says he is satisfied with the handling of the emergency.

"It is a big, old hospital and as you can imagine there will be demands on renewing pipe work on this, that and the other and we do. We spend a lot of money and we get our engineering building services people to tell us what the priorities are," he said.

Mr Turner says it highlights the need for the planned new RAH at the other end of North Terrace in the city ..

We really can't criticise third-world countries, can we. Our health system is definitely third-world standard.
